This was a very technical commission of a large sailing yacht under way. The Marconi 64 was a racing yacht that the clients father had sailed on for many years. He wanted to surprise his dad with the painting sporting the burgee from his sailing club. There were many considerations before starting the commission. The photos I worked from were limited and there was a lot of clutter on the deck which did not serve the painting. I had to be willing to eliminate in places and add in others to make it work. This first photo is of the stern and you can see how complicated the photo is.
The next photo is of the bow and the huge wave crashing over it. Powerful!!
The drawing was done and the first underpainting is done to see how it looks.
Then more details are added and the shapes are refined further.
Further into the painting the sails and the water are developed with many colors.. The client wanted clouds in the sky so those were added for interest. The custom burgee was added and all of lines were placed for the feeling of truly being under sail. The painting was given to his dad on fathers day and he could not have been happier.
Work with me to create a lasting gift for any occasion. Paintings are a statement of thoughtfulness and are life-long gifts that can be passed down to future generations.
